During February half term I enjoyed a wonderful family holiday snowboarding holiday in Italy.
We went to a small resort called Santa Caterina, Valfurva which is in northern Italy towards the Swiss boarder and it was amazing. I have boarded for many years and we generally go to the main large ski resorts and have been to France for the last 5 holidays. This year we joined a group of friends and who normally ski here due to the cheaper costs, we were slightly worried about whether we would like it.
It was perfect. The resort itself was picture postcard. This was my view upon arrival, looking out from my balcony over the ice skating rink and my son in the village.
Considering that it was half term and February so peak season for all skiers, the slopes were deserted and our hotel was only half full. I am assuming this is because the resort is not featured by the main ski operators. We had booked direct with the hotel and arranged our own flights and car hire. It was lovely to not have to queue for lifts and to be able to board down wide open pistes with just one or two other people. You’ll see in the photo’s that there are very few people in the background.
The weather was also amazing, bright sunshine almost everyday and a good base of snow. Unfortunately we didn’t receive any new fresh snow other than a light dusting but it was never too icy or slushy by the end of the day. We ate lunch outside everyday and food and drink was so much cheaper than France – at just 2 euros for a glass of wine, 3 for Prosecco and 1.5 for a cappuccino we didn’t have to worry about costs spiralling.
All in all it was an amazing holiday, I have become a fan of small resorts again and can’t wait for Easyjet to announce next years flights so that I can book up and go again.
