The Porridge Factor- Luxury By Degree

The Oatmeal/Porridge- Factor shows how various cruise ships will provide a client with a basic item such as a bowl of Porridge. The difference though is in its presentation. There are ships that provide one of three levels of presentation.

Lifestyle.

Designated as StandardThe least expensive, offering the basic amenities, food and services.

Designated as PremiumMore expensive than standard, have generally better food, service facilities, more attention to detail.

Designated as LuxuryMore expensive than Premium or Standard and provide more personal comfort, space, open or single seating for dining.Much better food (no processed items, more menu creativity, and everything made fresh), and highly trained staff.

STANDARD3* Hot Porridge (Supermarket brand oats) mixed with water, you get it at the soup tureen at the buffet, and put it in a plastic or inexpensive china bowl yourself ( or it may be served in the restaurant by your waiter, eaten with basic canteen cutlery.

PREMIUM. 4* Hot Porridge mixed with water, salt & a little olive oil. Served in a higher quality bowl, by a waiter or waitress, with hotel – quality (or better) cutlery. Its possible that the ship will serve with milk & you may even have a paper doily between the bowl and the plate it is sitting on.

LUXURY 6* Hot Porridge (medium or large flakes) milk & salt with a little extra virgin oil & nutmeg with a dash of blended Scotch (whisky) served in a high quality bowl (Versace) with base plate and doily and with high quality silverware. Naturally your waiter or waitress will ask you if you require any further milk etc.

So as you can see the levels vary quite a lot, all of the cruise lines want to give their clients the best level of service and meet expectations, you really do get what you pay for. That’s not to say the lower grade of company will not try to give you 100% so ensuring you make a return visit to them.
