Keep Calm And Caribbean

Beautiful day in the Villa Cut area betwqeen St. Vincent and Young Island

Last week saw the devastating effects of Mother Nature in full force, with the aftermath of hurricane Matthew, effecting so many lives throughout  the Caribbean and North America. With Haiti declaring a humanitarian disaster Zone.

I was personally watching events closely as my sister is flying to Jamaica shortly .

Working here at www.cruise.co.uk we had several calls from customers wondering what the effects would be on their Caribbean itineraries. There were several cruise lines effected by changes and deviations to certain ports of call. Few more so than RCI Royal Caribbean who had her Majesty of the seas late back into port.

What has impressed me since the devastating effects of Hurricane Matthew, is the commitment to the clean up efforts that the major cruise lines have taken it among themselves, and their world renowned charitable partners to assist, and aid the countries involved that are in such desperate need of support.

None more so than Royal Caribbean. In an honest and open letter to customers on board The Allure of The Seas last week CEO Michael Bayley said the following…

“The Cap Haitien area of the RCI owned Laadee was spared most of the damage from the storm and staff were able to remain on site meaning the clean up efforts could start immediately”.

The local School which is funded by Royal Caribbean was closed however they fully expect the school will be open for class as usual this week.

It is still unclear at this point the damage that has been caused to Co Co Cay Island, the fleets other privately owned Island, however Royal Caribbean are in communication with the Bahamian government to see what is needed and how they can assist in any way. Royal Caribbeans ships will be dropping off supplies in the coming days, and weeks to the most effected areas including but not limited to water, rice, beans, mattresses, sheets and pillows.

Royal Caribbean are actively encouraging all guests on board to get involved in charitable giving to add to the funds they have created.

It’s nice to know when I am booking people’s holidays of a life time they are traveling with such incredible, generous, and ethical companies.

I feel strongly that the people of Haiti who are still in many respects suffering from the effects of the earthquake in 2010 appreciate all the help and assistance provided by The Cruise industry.

As I sit writing this blog I have a heavy heart for the thousands of families involved.

If you were on board a cruise ship or effected by the Hurricane I would appropriate your comments below.
