Quantum – What Will It Do For You?

I thought that this week to coincide with the news from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line about the new features they are introducing on their Quantum class ships, I would try and be clever and give you the definition of what the word Quantum means – I have had to think again!

The results from my search of the word have proved far more difficult for me  to understand than the new very high tech features they will soon be offering.

Now, I don’t want to just list these –  how boring is that? But I wanted to give you just a little taster of what you can expect.

Apparently,  it’s only going to take 10 minutes from shore side to cabin – brilliant. I hate standing around, waiting to check in. I know the cruise lines try their best – they ask people to stagger their arrival time – so how come that request is ignored by the majority? How many times has Southampton been gridlocked this Summer?

How will they achieve this?

Well from the comfort of our own homes we can get our boarding documents online, we will be able to upload a picture that can be used as ID and we will receive digital boarding confirmation.   This means that when you arrive at the terminal there will be no need to check in, in fact there won’t be a check in counter, so in theory you will sail through the terminal in 10 minutes. And what about your luggage? Well that will have a radio controlled frequency that will enable it to be tracked at all times.

My personal opinion of a lot of this high tech stuff is that its great. As long as it doesn’t take away from the personal side of things. I don’t want it to be too techie – I also don’t want lots of the lovely cruise ship staff to loose their jobs. We need the personal touch, we need to feel we are special. So Royal Caribbean keep up the good work – but I am not sure about the robotic bar tenders  – don’t think they will be a lot of fun, do you?
