Transatlantic Ports Of Call

On our recent transatlantic cruise onboard P&O Britannia we had 4 ports of call during our 13 night itinerary, and I thought I would let you know a little bit more about the ports we visited and what we got upto. We travelled with a 2 year old so we couldn’t do anything to strenuous!

Our first port of call was Dominica, this was a new destination for me having never visited the island before and we decided to book a little trip through P&O. Our little boy loves trains so we opted for the Roseau by Trolley Train excursion , this would keep the little one happy but also give us a chance to view the local area. In Dominica as soon as you disembark you will find a little market area, I think every stall seemed to sell the same thing but there are plenty of trinkets and local crafts you can purchase. we boarded the trolley train and headed off, our first stop was the botanical gardens in Roseau, the tour guide showed us around the gardens which are beautiful and the parrot enclosures. the trip included a complimentary rum punch also. we then re boarded and our next stop was a local church, as it was a Sunday the locals were arriving for their service so we didn’t opt to stay to long with  a toddler in tow and instead headed back to the train and the driver let Alfie ring the bell which he was very proud to do! The trip gave us a view of the local area and some great photo opportunities, we was onboard around an hour and a half which is more than enough with a toddler!

Our next port was Tortola, we have visited the island previously in which we took a full day island tour so on this visit we opted to just disembark and have a local walk into town. We did the easily, we found a little market with colour full huts, we stopped for a local cocktail while Alfie had a nap and en route back to the ship we found a little bar with free WIFI and couldn’t resist a quick catch up with home!

Our last Caribbean port was one of my all time favourite Caribbean islands, St Maarten. Again we have visited before so we had a plan which was to disembark  walk into town and spend the day on the beautiful beach and this is exactly what we did! it takes maybe 20 minutes or so to walk to the beach, you can take a water taxi also but we enjoy the walk. we bagged our self 2 sunbeds and a parasol right next to the sea and enjoyed sunbathing, swimming and most importantly building sandcastles! There was waiter service so we enjoyed drinks and lunch brought right to our sunbed, perfect! There are plenty of duty free shops on the island so it makes for a perfect shopping trip if you fancy it too!

After 5 days at sea our last port of call was Ponta Delgada in the Azores, this was a new port of call for us. We viewed the excursions on offer but nothing was ‘child friendly’ so we decided t embark and have a walk around on our own. It was grey and raining so this made for a pretty dull day! It didn’t take long to walk into town maybe 15 minutes or so, but we found there was nothing really there, a few shops and very small cafe’s but that was your lot. we were disappointed! We were looking forward to a day on land after 5 days at sea but there was really nothing to do for us so by lunch time we were back onboard!

These are my own personal views on our ports of call, if you are visiting any of the ports spoon I hope you have a fantastic time!
