The Vikings go to Sea – New for 2015

Recently I raised a question via one of my blogs about the size of today’s new cruise ships and how much bigger they all seem to be getting, possibly losing that more personal/traditional touch of cruising. Click on this link if you missed it Is bigger really better?

Well I am pleased to say that at last a company has decided to make smaller, more intimate ships that focus on relaxing and enjoying cruising without a flow rider or bumper car in sight.

Viking have always been known for their fantastic river cruises and if you follow my blog you will know that I have not long returned from a 4 day experience and absolutely loved it. Their long ships for the rivers are beautiful and contemporary without all the gimmicks, focusing on getting to really know their guests and enjoying many repeat guests year after year. They also focus on destinations and the tours they include are of great interest and well organised and presented. I was really impressed, even when we couldn’t sail due to weather conditions, they still made sure we got to enjoy our promised excursion.

Whilst on board I finally got to hear all about their new venture into the world of Ocean Cruises and their first ship the Viking Star is due to set sail spring of 2015 with two more ships to follow. Now, we have not really heard much about this in the British Cruise market, just snippets here and there and one of the reasons is they actually haven’t had to promote the ship as it is virtually SOLD OUT for 2015 already!!! I know, this is phenomenal that they have already sold out and left the UK market in the cold a bit. It seems that the demand was more from our American Cousins looking for something a bit more than the river cruises and they have literally gone barmy over the fact that Viking are going to sail the oceans.

So here is a peak of the new breed of Vikings that will be soon roaming the oceans and not just the rivers. Oozing in style and sophistication these ships are aiming to be in the luxury 5-6* category and I don’t think it will take them long to get there.

With a maximum passenger capacity of 928, these new ships are just perfect for someone looking for a stylish but traditional way to cruise.

The Viking Star will be calling into Greenwich, London during one of her voyages to the Mediterranean and I’ve already asked if I can go and have a visit whilst she is here, fingers crossed I can give you more information in a few months time.

So watch this space on more Viking action.
