There’s a bear in my bedroom!!!

Working on cruise ships and spending a whole season in Alaska was the highlight of my career with Princess Cruises.

The season runs from May to September and I personally think that May is the best time to travel as there is still snow on the mountains and the scenery is breathtaking.

Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 and was  admitted as the 49th state in the US in 1959. It is the largest state by area but only has a population of 735000 with half living within the Anchorage area.

For anyone who is interested in wildlife and scenery then Alaska is a must.

I booked my parents on a cruise to Alaska a few years ago and here they are in Glacier Bay.

Many of the towns have not changed since the Klondike era and you can get a true sense of the history of the place.

Wildlife is abundant and you may see Brown Bears , Sea Otter, Orcas, Humpback Whales or Bald Eagles depending on the time of year.

Shore Excursions are extremely varied in Alaska but one that you must do is the White Scenic Pass train in Skagway that takes you on the old Klondike trail in the footsteps of the first pioneers. Thousands of pioneers died just trying to climb several of the mountains in to the Gold camps.

Many of the places that you can visit still have links to the past such as Sitka which has a beautiful Russian orthodox church in the centre of town.

I was also recently made aware of a fantastic site where you can watch live feed as Grizzlies come to feed on the salmon as they make their way up stream.

Just remember that Alaska is 9 hours behind us!!!

I found myself addicted and watching this at 2am in the morning. My husband was not amused when I screamed “there’s a bear” at 2am!!
