The Raising Of The Costa Concordia

As I am sat here writing this on Monday 16th September 2013 I am watching a remarkable piece of engineering unfold in front of my eyes via a live video feed from the Island of Giglio where engineers are attempting to raise the Costa Concordia. And so far it seems to be working!

Costa Concordia has been lying on her starboard side since it hit rocks in January 2012 killing 32 people onboard. Two of these are still unaccounted for and finding them will be one of the main missions once the ship has been stabilised.

To get to this point has taken a team of 500 salvage experts from over 24 countries and almost 21 months.

Having worked at sea for three years I still find it disturbing that there seemed to be a lack of co-ordination in the efforts to evacuate the ship and that the alarm was raised so late but I will hold judgement until all the facts have been released.

The former Captain of the ship, Captain Schettino, is due back in court on 23rd September 2013. Five officers have already been charged with manslaughter.

What confounds me is why no one any higher in Costa (or parent company Carnival) has been held responsible for this or been questioned as surely they are as much to blame as those officers onboard?
