The work will see the addition of 10 Single cabins and 30 Club Balcony staterooms as well as more, yet unannounced, innovative developments to the ship – the flagship of Cunard`s fleet.

Queen Mary is one of my favourite ships ever since I did a transatlantic crossing on her a few years ago. I travelled in August when the sea was like a millpond and, apart from one day of real mist, the weather was good. I loved the ship! We had a balcony which was very spacious and well furnished, the ” sheltered ” balcony was perfect for crossing the Atlantic as you can still go outside for fresh air but be protected from the wind which is always present crossing the pond.

The ship is large, built to cross oceans, but I never felt we were actually on a big ship because of the way she is designed. The Britannia restaurant is large and well set out but I loved Todd English the speciality option, be warned though the portions are very large ! The Golden Lion Pub had a great atmosphere as well as good pub grub at lunch time, we also spent a couple of afternoons in the Commodore Club learning how to make various cocktails & martinis – Red Snapper was my favourite.

There is so much to do that, even with 7 sea days, you can never get bored. We went to the spa every day which was really lovely and quiet, the planetarium is not to be missed and the theatre excellent. Surprisingly the disco was one of the liveliest, and busiest, I`ve seen on any ship. Not to forget afternoon tea in the Queen`s Room of course!

So what will the refurbishments bring to the ship? As yet very little has been announced apart from one very important part of the ship – the kennels & cattery! Ten new dog and cat kennels are to be created, currently she can carry up to 12 dogs and cats on transatlantic crossings, there will also be a lamp post and a fire hydrant installed on the dog walking deck – I wonder what they will be used for ! Maybe I will take Rowan on-board !
