Norwegian Cruise Line are saving the Earth

Happy Earth day people.

Just in case you are wondering what this is,  Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

In support of this Norwegian Cruise Lines have been committed to the protection of the oceans and have celebrated key achievements from the past year to make them eco smart cruises.
The company is leading the cruise industry with many innovative environmental policies —from rubbish, waste and recycling programs to reducing the operational impact on the environment. In 2013 alone, Norwegian achieved the following earth-saving milestones:

*Recycled 1,254 tons of cardboard, saving 23,540 mature trees. This represents enough saved timber resources to produce more than 292 million sheets of newspaper.
*Additionally recycled 2,517 tons of scrap metal; 2,988 tons of glass; and 669 tons of plastic, along with managing 750 tons of refuse at Waste-to-Energy facilities, conserving enough kilowatt hours to fulfill the monthly electric needs of more than 1,700 homes.

Norwegian also has a comprehensive program to educate its guests and encourage everyone to participate in environmental programs. Young cruisers who participate in Splash Academy and Entourage can learn about the importance of clean water through the innovative Officer Snook Water Pollution Program. They learn about the effects and prevention of marine pollution with activities that include a simulated beach cleanup and an environmental poster contest. High school students can earn between one and five hours of community service for participating in the program.
As passengers on board  a cruise we can all be a bit more conscious about the planet and try and be a bit more greener. Little things such as keeping your towels for an extra day in your cabin , if they are still fresh then using them again is a great help. Also on board ships you can look out for specially marked containers which will collect food , glass and plastic products. If you are travelling with the likes of Cunard they will even explain the disposable and recycling procedures in the Daily programme and have the environmental officer on board who will  give talks on how the company protects the environment.
If we all stay green on board we are doing our bit and if you think about how many cruise ships operate through the oceans each day it will make a big difference.
