What You Need To Know About New York

What are the can’t-miss sights in New York?

Fine art and thought-provoking architecture greet you around every turn in New York, starting with its multitude of museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim and Natural History Museum are all good places to start for artworks spanning the centuries. Have a wander through the Lower East Side and visit Ellis Island to learn more about immigrant life, and then admire the marks that various nationalities have left in distinct areas like Chinatown, Little Italy and Astoria. Enjoy the nightlife in a Broadway theatre or Greenwich Village jazz club, soak in the neon lights of Times Square, or see what’s happening in Brooklyn with its sprawling Prospect Park and Brooklyn Museum.

How can you reach New York from the cruise terminal?

There are cruise terminals in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Most cruise ships dock in Manhattan’s port, located to the west of the Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood. You’ll be just moments from Times Square here, with the terminal just a 15-minute walk into the heart of Midtown. Taxis are available in abundance, and although there isn’t a subway stop at the terminal you’ll find one a short walk away at 42 nd Street. Apart from walking, the subway is the best way to get around NYC, operating 24 hours a day and getting you from point A to point B faster than above-ground traffic allows.

Parking facilities around the cruise terminal

There are public parking facilities available throughout the city, with clearly marked metres. If you need to park directly at the terminal, you’ll find parking lots at each pier. The best way to reach the piers by car is to drive up the Viaduct Ramp. This is found at 55 th Street and will take you to the receiving area. For access to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, you’ll find parking located a few hundred yards to the south of the main entrance and exit. No reservations are needed to park in this secure facility.

NEW YORK - DID YOU KNOW?

Dining is one of the premier attractions in New York! Visit food courts like Gotham West Market to see what’s happening on the pop-up scene, or head to Grimaldi’s Pizza to try a slice of the legendary thin-crust pie. Chinatown is a treasure trove of dim sum eateries, or you can venture to Coney Island to enjoy a Nathan’s Famous hot dog in the sea air. Shopping is also a must in this city, whether you’re after haute couture or one-of-a-kind bargains. The Strand is a famous bookstore in Union Square with a dizzying range of used and rare titles, while
Chelsea Market and Brooklyn Flea are jam-packed with cool artisan-made souvenirs. Although New York’s art museums get the most attention, the city’s American Museum of Natural History is a fascinating destination with over 36 million specimens to pore over. Highlights include the life-sized blue whale and world’s largest meteorite! You can easily spend the day in Central Park alone. This lush green space is carefully and elegantly laid out to provide a network of meadows framed by trees, lakes and sports playing fields. There are over 800 acres to explore, including the famous Strawberry Fields in tribute to John Lennon.
