Dover Cruises

Dover enjoys a rather spectacular setting – it’s hard not to be awed by its famous white cliffs made from soft limestone chalk. The city was a popular Victorian seaside resort, and has bene used for thousands of years as a strategic defence against invaders. You can learn more about its military use by visiting the Secret Wartime Tunnels, burrowing their way under its impressive Dover Castle. Cruising here puts you just 1.5 hours away from London by train, but there’s plenty to enjoy within Dover with its Channel views, seaside ambience, and the greenery of Samphire Hoe Country Park.

What You Need To Know About Dover

What are the can’t-miss sights in Dover?

Dover Castle is a highlight of any visit, being one of England’s oldest and best-preserved castles of its kind. It was constructed in the 12 th century by Henry II and is stood near the Pharos lighthouse built by Romans 1000 years before this! Secret tunnels are located underneath the castle, used during the Battle of Britain. Don’t miss a closer look at the White Cliffs nearby, which you can see from viewpoints like the Prince of Wales pier. You can take boat tours to see them from below as well, or enjoy a gentle ramble around the White Cliffs Park to spot seabirds and enjoy the view.

How can you reach Dover from the cruise terminal?

The port in Dover is about a 20-minute walk from the city centre, or a 10-minute taxi ride. There’s a shuttle bus available to take you to and from Priory Station at most times of day as well. It may be worth hiring a car here if you want to get out and explore nearby villages like Rye or towns like Canterbury, however. Taxis are easy to find, available both at the terminal and in the city centre, and you’ll find all major car hire agencies on hand. Once in Dover, there’s a high-speed train to take you to and from London in just under an hour and a half.

Parking facilities around the cruise terminal

There aren’t any parking facilities in the Port of Dover. The port operators recommend using one of their preferred private providers, Relyon Parking or Port Parking. Relyon Ferry Parking is located three miles away from the terminal, with a complimentary shuttle service to take you to and from your car to the ship. Port Parking is even closer, located right next to the Eastern Docks. This means that you won’t need to take a shuttle bus, an added bonus if you’re short on time! Both facilities offer the latest security features, including perimeter fencing and CCTV.

DOVER - DID YOU KNOW?

The region in and around Dover has been occupied for thousands of years. Go back in time with a visit to the Dover Museum and Bronze Age Boat Gallery, which showcases artefacts found
throughout the centuries. A lot of it is quite hands-on, with microscopes to help you get involved! You can also visit the Roman Painted House, which is believed to be 2,000 years old. Can’t get enough castles? If you’ve already toured Dover Castle and are thirsting for more, visit Henry VII’s Walmer Castle. This was built in 1539 with the idea that it would be used as a fortress to
fight against invaders from France. Its gardens are particularly lovely. The Battle of Britain left a huge mark on the area. If you have any interest in WWII history, a visit to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum is a must, with its display of flying equipment, artefacts, and exhibitions detailing this important military event. A good day trip from Dover is to the city of Canterbury, one of England’s first Christian sites. Its famed for its apple and cider industry today, as well as being the site of Canterbury Cathedral with its awe-inspiring stained-glass windows and centuries of legends.
