Laid-back, freewheeling Amsterdam is a great place to get lost. You’ll find quirky markets dotting its plazas with fresh flowers and second-hand books, while world-famous works of art fill museums like the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, and Van Gogh Museum. Don’t forget to visit the Hermitage Amsterdam, an outpost of Russia’s famous exhibition space! Relax in a coffee shop or eat your fill of locally made chocolate and cheese. What You Need To Know About Amsterdam

What are the can’t-miss sights in Amsterdam?

This picturesque city is stuffed full of big-name attractions and world-class museums. The Rijksmuseum is one of the best, housing paintings from the Dutch masters Vermeer, Steen, Hals and Rembrandt. You can also visit the Van Gogh Museum to see the temperamental artist’s best work, including ‘Sunflowers’ and others. Rembrandt’s House Museum is a reconstruction of the artist’s home and studio with modern-day experts showing off his top techniques. Pay a visit to the Anne Frank House, as timely and poignant as ever, and visit the Royal Palace built in the 17 th century. And no visit to Amsterdam would be complete without wandering through its seedy Red Light District.

How can you reach Amsterdam from the cruise terminal?

Amsterdam’s port is organised and welcoming, with a market in the terminal where you can buy cards to use on public transportation. The bus system extends to the Docklands area, so you can take a bus into the Central Station or Dam Square. Metered taxis are also on hand to greet you for a quick and easy ride into town. Amsterdam is a large city yet extremely walkable, but its meandering circular streets do warrant a good map if you plan to get around on foot! Trams cover most of the old city, and you can do as the locals do and hire a bicycle.

Parking facilities around the cruise terminal

Amsterpark offers an officially approved parking facility for cruise passengers. They’ll pick you up right at the Passenger Cruise Terminal and drive your car to an approved, secure location where it will be monitored with camera surveillance until your return. It can be tough to find city centre parking so this is a good option for those arriving and departing with their own vehicles, and you don’t have to worry about shuttle services. You’ll need to reserve your spot in advance, after which you’ll receive a booking voucher with the car park address and other info.

AMSTERDAM - DID YOU KNOW?

Although there are loads of ways to get around town, one of the most scenic is by canal boat! Sign up for a leisurely canal boat scenic cruise, and you’ll wind your way down the rings of canals that cross this pretty city. Boats feature a glass top, making them comfortable in all weather conditions. It may be famous for its museums, but Amsterdam is just as impressive on the shopping front. Wander around the streets surrounding Dam Square to find the equivalent of a high street, with department stores like Bijenkorf and shopping centres like the Magna Plaza close at hand. Shop for antiques in the Spiegelkwartier (translated as ‘mirror quarter’), or pop into art galleries tucked away around the canals. Markets are good fun in Amsterdam, with something to browse in the fresh air every day of the week. The Floating Flower Market is a particularly picturesque option in this land of tulips, located on the Singel Canal. There’s a Book Market at Spui, Sunday Art Market at Thorbeckeplein, and Flea Market at Waterlooplein among others! Can’t get enough flowers? Set your alarm and get up for the Aalsmeer Flower Auction, the world’s
largest of its kind. This takes place in Aalsmeer from Monday to Friday, with millions of daffodils and tulips passing through each day.
