Be Onboard with Betsy

Girl Power

Well it isn’t very often you see Lady bus drivers, taxi drivers etc but it hasn’t even crossed my mind about the lack of female captains until now.

As Cunard have appointed their first female captain ‘Inger Klein Thorhauge’ who will be sailing the Queen Victoria, it got me thinking although I
have seen female officers I dint know if there had ever been any female officers previously. After a little bit of research I found that P&O actually has a female captain who was appointed back in 2010′ Sarah Breton’ .She was the first female captain in P&O Cruises’ 173-year history and the only woman ever to hold that exalted position on any UK cruise ship. WOW imagine being her !!!Thats some milestone .

Inger had grown up by the sea and at the age of 16 became a stewardess moving to a deck officer in 1997 and then becoming a captain felt like a natural career path .

It took nine years before her Master License was fully endorsed and as she said the position of a female captain is pretty unique and will always attention.

When asked about the competition to become captain Inger said she was unaware of any other women attempting to become captain. She also commented that the tough competition was “nothing out of the ordinary,” compared to elsewhere.

What a great time to become captain and be part of Cunard’s 175th anniversary year .

What do you think about a female captain ?
