How to avoid a hurricane in the Caribbean

Last week saw the devastating hurricane Matthew which is still causing deadly flooding in Southern parts of the US.

Parts of Haiti have been completely destroyed and now there is a fear of cholera outbreak due to the flooding.

Most of the Caribbean escaped this hurricane but in the past the storms have caused misery to holiday makers with not only delays but fear of the unknown! The great thing about a cruise is the captain can avoid any storms at sea by taking a de tour.

The last time I went to Cuba we caught the tail end of hurricane Wilma! It was quite scary! The advice we were given was to stay in our room, pack our cases and make sure they were high up. Nothing should be left on the floor because of the risk of flooding. Fortunately when I woke up in the morning the storm had passed us without much damage! It was mainly palm trees which had taken the brunt of it. Walking along the beach it was very windy and misty. Flight cancellations and delays were experienced by some but the schedules soon got back to normal.

Hurricanes tend to occur during the months of August through to October which is one of the reasons so many chose to take holidays and cruises in the winter months.

Late October and November is when I have travelled to the Caribbean in the past and found the weather to be excellent. Occasionally a tropical downpour late afternoon/ early evening which freshens up the air for the next morning! Peak time is Christmas through to March/ April or Easter.

Again the weather tends to remain a solid 29-31 degrees with a nice cool seas breeze making it pleasant!

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao also known as the ABC islands are unlikely to be affected by a hurricane because they are outside of the general path that most hurricanes take. Also known as Hurricane alley! These island are located in the Southern Caribbean less than 500 miles from Venezuela
