A use for Royal Caribbean’s “Wow wristband” once you get home

I was really impressed with Royal Caribbean’s new ship the Anthem of the Seas when I recently got chance to sail on her 2 night pre-inaugural voyage.  One of the main features of Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum Class of ships is the fact that they are “smart ships”.  Royal Caribbean have certainly made quite an effort to use modern technology to make the cruisers experience better. Features include super fast wifi, smart checking in on tablets, booking activities on the ship with an app, robotic bartenders, virtual balconies and more.

When you are on the ship rather than a normal key card you have the use of a wristband that you can swipe to interact with things and open your cabin door.  You get to keep the wrist band when you come home and I thought to myself there must be some sort of use for it.

I have used mine as a Car Dock tag in my car.  The wrist band uses an NFC chip so you can get a compatible smart phone to do what ever you like when it is swiped against the tag.

I have mine set so when I get in my car and swipe my phone against the wrist band it turns off wifi, turns on bluetooth (so my stereo can connect) and launches the phones car docking software.  When I leave the car I swipe again and any music playing is stopped, the car dock software is closed, bluetooth is turned back off and wifi is turned back on.

This actually seems to work quite well, I might have to take the chip out of the wristband and mount the chip under the dashboard.
