Just Name It!

When you think about it the name of a ship is almost as important as the design of a ship to get that High Impact impression for passengers and Cruise Trade

Names are for life and are hugely important as they influence our imagination and expectations of what to expect on board and from the cruise experience

Let’s face it you wouldn’t cruise on a ship named Boaty Mc Boat Face would you?

It is a massive responsibility to come up with a suitable name that suits the brand and other ships in the fleet

I can’t even imagine the thought process and corporate brainstorming that must go into making the decision – if the cruise line gets it wrong for a new ship it could have a disastrous effect!

I found it hard enough naming my child – if I had a boy my husband wanted to call him Gary (after Lineker – he is a big Leicester City fan) or Spartacus – thankfully I had a girl…..

Similarly my old dog Elvis passed away in January and we had to come up with a similarly befitting name for our new puppy – after much contemplation we decided on Otis

The problem we had was that we know so many dog owners and didn’t want to call him any of the other dog’s names and all of the good ones had already been taken – with so many ships this must also be a headache for inspiration for new ship names

There is an awful lot to be said for the naming to give the right impression and to reflect on the rest of the fleet – many cruise lines have themes – Celebrity’s Solstice class are all Solar names with the exception of their soon to be launched ‘The Edge’ I’m not so sure about this …, MSCs are musical, Royal Caribbean of course are all … of the Seas, with their 4th Oasis Class ship name leaked today to be Symphony of the Seas

Majestic Princess and MSC Seaside are launching this year, NCL Joy was originally to be named NCL Bliss but had a name change due to catering for the Asian market

Radically P&O have revealed new details about the brand new ship set to launch in 2020 and announced that fans will be able to decide her name.

Carnival UK chief David Noyles explained that the ship would be named from suggestions from a competition involving past, present and future P&O guests – what would you choose???…..
