How International is your Cruise?

When you think about it there are not many holidays, resorts, hotels or destinations that you might visit that are as International as cruises with such a diverse cultural and cosmopolitan population

You might expect up to 10 nationalities staying in a hotel but on a cruise ship you would be surprised how many countries people travel from

Typically you would expect a majority of passengers to be from the country of departure – Americans for the Caribbean, Australians for South Pacific itineraries, Europeans and British for Med and Baltic cruises and Oriental passengers for Asian cruises, similarly you would expect many Italian passengers to cruise with MSC and Costa and mainly UK passengers to cruise from Southampton with P&O and Royal Caribbean, overall  North America held the largest share of cruise passengers in 2014 – 11.21 million people from the United States took a cruise, there was a total of 22.04 million cruise passengers worldwide followed by German and UK passengers

You might be surprised to know that a guest told me recently that on board Azamara cruising from Rome to Dubai of 700 passengers there were 24 nationalities on board – not including the crew

227 British

152 Americans

66 Canadians

48 Australians

40 Norwegians

38 Germans

10 Swiss

plus passengers from

Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, France, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Argentina, Mexico, Honduras, Denmark, Finland, Ecuador, Romania, Austria, Belgium and Sweden

Other statistics show 25% equally of the age ranges 30-39, 50-59 and 60-74

Cruisers’ annual household income was £114,000

The vast majority of cruise passengers were employed (72%), college educated (69%) and married (84%)

86% of cruisers planned to take another cruise in the next three years.

Cruisers spent an average of £2,200 per person on their last cruise, with £1,635 allocated to the fare, £565 for on board and shore expenses and £524 for airfare—among the 62% that flew to their port.

These are interesting statistics, if this is the dynamic for a 700 passenger ship I can only  imagine the worldwide figures of a 3500 passengers vessel!!
