Would you visit a futuristic South Korean ‘Chernobyl-like’ Ghost town?

This is a little of piste for me writing about a place you technically can not cruise to however I saw an article in the press this week that caught my interest.

We have many ships that sail to Seoul South Korea and I have always heard about how futuristic this modern metropolis style city is.

What I hadn’t released is that 15 years ago the forward thinking Korean’s commissioned one of the worlds biggest projects to design an Eco-friendly future proof High Tech Utopia of Songdo, built entirely from scratch and no doubt learning from Dubai’s transformation in the Emirates they set about converting over 600 hectares of reclaimed land from the Yellow Sea.

Locals were promised a city built for the future the city was alleged to push the boundaries of world technologies, environment education construction and business but less than 15 years and $40 Billion dollars later the half built metropolis sits vacant like the eerie ghost towns of Chernobyl or latterly Fukushima.

I assume funding was the biggest issue and the forward thinking Koreans may not have anticipated one of the worst credit Crunches since 1929 but is this really the end of the line for Songdo well not until the fat lady sings the very last Songdo.

Far from giving up on the project, Songdo’s developers are now going out of their way to entice foreigners, including Brits, with the construction of ‘American Town’.

What are your thoughts on this a city designed to be the first ever car free city is no void of people. completely sole less and a drain on all resources.

If any of the main cruise lines read this blog wouldn’t it be an exciting day trip to the North East coast of Korean on one of their Alisa cruises so you can see what $40 Billion pounds can almost buy you.
