Whale! What a view!

As of this week Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska has ordered visiting cruise ships which carry more than 12 passengers to slow down to 10 knots in whale-heavy areas. This request is expected to stay for the foreseeable future.

Previously cruise companies were permitted to travel at speeds of  13 knots. Other Existing regulations also insure  cruise ships to maintain at least a 1/4-mile distance to these beautiful whales in Glacier Bay. Park officials advise that these regulations are designed to reduce whale disturbance and the risk of whale-vessel collision.

Several of the cruise lines we feature including Princess Cruises and Holland America offer sailings into Glacier Bay National Park annually, both companies insist these new speed limit will have no impact on the passenger experience during visits to the park.

At statement released from the NPS advises “The best available scientific information indicates that reducing speed is the best way to reduce the risk of whale-vessel collisions. A slower speed gives the whale more time to react and move out of the way of the vessel,”

Although the North Pacific Humpback Whales are no longer on the official endangered Species list , I am sure you will agree that looking after these animals and introducing these regulations is a great idea and extremely important.

As well as looking after these incredible animals, these new regulations and speed limits mean passengers will get longer to take in these breath-taking surroundings with  an impressive 3.3-million acres, south eastern Alaska’s scenic coastal islands, narrow fjords and substantial wildlife offer an inspirational glimpse of the pristine beauty of Glacier Bay National Park. How can I little longer and slower journey hurt?
