It tough to be a smoker!

In past eras smoking was quite classy, cool and  even sexy and sometimes you may have stood out not being a smoker , however gone are the days where smoking was socially acceptable, and in a world of anti smoking gradually the cruise lines have all come to the same conclusion.

Over recent years since the no smoking legislations ban smoking in public inside areas, majority of cruise line have taken action in introducing designated smoking areas, mainly out on deck, and passengers are generally allowed to smoke on their cabin balconies and in some indoor smoking or cigar rooms. The most recent to impose new strict rules was Holland America in October 2016.

No cruise line is completely smoke free however most have made small smoking area through out the ship , some have designated areas of night clubs and some even cigar rooms. A lot still allow smoking in Casinos is a clever ploy to get guest gambling (they are not silly).

But……………. I think the most controversial move by any cruise line was to abolish smoking on balconies and in staterooms. I have spoken to many customers that no refuse to cruise any more once this was put in place. I have some that questioned whether they would actually find out if they light up on the balcony (believe me they know and have the technology to alert any rule breakers). This rule was mainly brought in for guest safety due to a number of fires started by people disposing of their cigarette end off the balconies and them causing fires in lower cabins.

However there is still small ash burning light at the end of the tunnel as most cruise line did adopt the moden restrictions  Costa Cruises, Fred Olsen, and Hebridean  all still allow guest to smoke on their balconies.

So in this new ages of smoking we now have the new fashion of vaping and e cigarettes. These was brought out and designed to try and get smokers to quit and not as a alternative to try and get around the smoking ban. With the exception of a few all cruise lines treat these devices the same as real cigarettes and the same restrictions apply, the only cruise lines allowing the use of them in cabins are Cunard and Fred Oslen.

So what do you think? If you are smoker or not please let me know. Are you pleased that these rules are now enforced? Or would these rules present you from cruising?
