The long drive

Over my 8 years of selling cruises I have come across the same strange objection of refusing to fly from an airport the other side of the country.

Fair enough you may think but this is where I get confused.

A client lives north of England, or maybe Scotland and calls for a cruise departing from Southampton, it’s not avaialble, too expensive or going on the wrong date so we look at a fly cruise alternative.

I find a great deal that is perfect for the client but can only get flights from Gatwick/ Heathrow, some 2 hours nearer to home than Southampton and I am told ‘I won’t fly from London, it’s too far’. OK, how does that work?

Some clients tell me they feel reluctant to drive past so many airports closer to home on their way to London,  I can understand that but then why is it OK to cruise from Southampton and drive past the ports of Liverpool, Greenock, Newcastle, Hull……?

There are many things that baffle me about us humans but fortunate for us the cruiselines and their pricing structures baffle me more so for now I will focus on that and argue it out with them.

It never feels right to question a client on the phone about why they won’t travel to an airport but will travel to Southampton so if you have any ideas on this I would be glad to hear them.
