Stromboli in Sicily

Have you ever seen a Volcano in action? It’s one of the most amazing phenomenon nature has got to offer. In the distance the hot lava descending from the Volcano looks like roads of fire! I always wanted to see it!
It’s nearly holiday time for me and for this summer we thought of taking a trip to the Aolian Islands especially to see Stromboli at night, an active vulcano puffing every 10-20 minutes whilst red firey lava descends to valley. On one of the days we will be on an 11 hours boat trip which will be stopping at different islands, giving plenty of time for sunbathing and enjoying the beauty the islands have to offer. The sceneries throughout the archipelago are breathtaking, we will end the tour floating around Stomboli after sunset watching the volcano erupting as it happens. It’s very safe and it’s a once in a lifetime experience. It is possible to go hiking and get even closer from the viewing points but I thought we would give that a miss. There are also guided tours where It’s possible to stay overnight in tents, an interesting trip if you’re adventurous and not travelling with children.
Here is a little bit more info about Stromboli: nicknamed the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean, is a volcano in the middle of the Tirrenian Sea of the North East Coast of Sicily, one of the eight Aeolian Islands. The volcano has been in continuous eruption for the past 2,000 years with minor eruptions often visible from many points on the islands and from the surrounding sea.

This is why P&O is very proud to announce this as One of Ten best places to see from the Sea on their table league! This phenomenon can be seen on many itineraries that will be transiting the Tirrenian sea of the north coast of Sicily, from star board if you are cruising from West to East and from port side if you’re cruising from East to West . The only time to see it is at night after sunset. Look out for those itineraries especially those with a stop in Messina or Catania as the ship will be getting closer, have a stroll on deck at night to enjoy this spectacular scenery!! In my opinion this is as exciting as the Northern lights or the Midnight sun and it’s a must see you don’t want to miss!!
