Please keep your children safe

I just wanted to launch a message before the school holiday season starts, to keep your children safe around swimming pools

Schools are getting to the end of term and the long waited holiday season is upon us and our children can finally enjoy the long awaited summer, weather permitting. Many of you might be taking holidays abroad or somewhere in the UK, a cruise or a holiday park etcetera. Whichever your plans all these places may have more than one thing in common, but most importantly a swimming pool. Many sad accidents happen every year we don’t even hear about but where there is an unattended pool there is danger. In most places and holiday resorts you will see a life guard by the pool but if there isn’t one make sure there is an adult to supervise children playing by the pool.  Kids can drown in even a few inches of water. A similar experience happened to me as a child. I was playing with the ball in knee length water on the beach when I tripped over and somehow i completely lost orientation and I couldn’t find the ground to get up, luckily my uncle was there playing with us and i still remember him pulling me out by my arm and of course a telling off as he thought i was joking. I was a bit shocked as didn’t really understand what had happened and i didn’t realise until a good few years later how lucky i was that day! Unfortunately accidents happen and it’s heart breaking to hear sad stories happening across the globe and including cruise ships. Unfortunately, there are no regulations for cruise ships to have life guards guarding the swimming pools on board and i think there is a need of way overdue regulations, I really hope cruise companies wake up and start doing something about it and realise that surveillance by swimming pools is essential. With ships getting bigger, activities are becoming more thrilling and you can find aqua parks on board some of the bigger liners

So, make water safety your priority whether on a cruise ship on the beach or anywhere else

Never let anyone swim alone

Maintain constant supervision

Only let you children in pools if you can swim yourself and don’t trust other children for supervision

If you go boating, wear a life jacket! Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.

Be cautious of currents and cold temperatures as they can become hazards.

Prevent unsupervised access to water, also keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.

Think ahead and know what to do in case of an emergency

And please don’t let you children cycle or run by a pool

Unfortunately, mass media doesn’t talk about these kind of tragic events but these happen more often than we think.

We all know how easy it is to get distracted by giving the attention to one child and losing it for the other child.

Way too many cruises are marketed as family friendly but not enough safety measures are taken in consideration to keep children safe so please be vigilant and take all the precautions, if you see anyone close to danger don’t ignore it and offer help

I’d love to hear your opinion, Feel free to leave a comment
