My fantastic River cruise weekend on Emerald Sky

Emerald Sky (3)

Thank you so much Emerald waterways for providing accommodation and wonderful hospitality last weekend when I visited Amsterdam for the 2014 River cruise convention.

I am still unsure what I was expecting when I arrived at the dock in Amsterdam where the Emerald Sky was awaiting. Amsterdam was cold and wet however the Emerald Sky was splendid, bright, modern and very inviting. To say I was shocked would be an understatement!

From the minute I stepped on-board it just got better and better! The staff were friendly and very helpful. I was taken to my cabin which was a panorama balcony suite and the wow continued. At first I was unsure where the balcony was until I discovered a button which dropped the upper part of the window to reveal the outside world and uninterrupted views over the river! Impressive! My photographs do it no justice!

The patio furniture is placed beneath the window to enjoy the views and the fresh air. The cabin décor was very contemporary and I feel this would appeal to most guests because it offers a clean, relaxing and sleek experience.

Storage was good including space for cases under the bed and draws under the oversized TV! Someone put a lot of thought into the design which I feel has really paid off.

Upgrade to a Grand balcony suite if you prefer your balcony to be permanently outside. Great if you like a little extra space and would like to be on the higher deck (there is just 2 decks).

Emerald describe themselves as being “Europe’s most stylish fleet” and I believe it! The lounge/ bar area was so relaxing! The seating was so comfy and waiters served you from your sofa or chair! The drinks were reasonable. I had a glass of wine with lemonade which came to 4 Euros and later a bailey’s came to 4 Euros 75. It was cheaper than to drink in the city!

Complementary wine, beer and soft drinks are served during lunch and dinner. The wine was delicious too! Coffee and tea is also served and complementary at all times. The food was amazing! I lost track of how many courses but there was something for everyone. If you prefer something light I really enjoyed the salad with a little pasta. Deserts were total indulgence! Small portions is not an excuse to sample a little of everything!

The one thing that attracts many gusts to a River cruise is the fact that excursions are included. There is always at least one option at every port with Emerald. I was lucky enough to experience a canal boat cruise round Amsterdam during my short stay. It was a brilliant way to see the city, shame the weather was so wet but it was still very enjoyable. It was just an hour so you would have plenty of time for other activities or even a walking tour which is available remotely. Bikes are also available and Amsterdam is the best place to cycle because it’s so flat.

Finally back to the Emerald sky to be wowed even more when I visited the spa. There is a pool at the back of the ship which also teams up as a cinema. Very innovative! Popcorn is served, purchase a drink at the bar and watch a film from the comfort of the pool chairs or dip your toes in the very inviting pool! Lovely! My kind of end to the night!

Have you been on a river cruise?

I would love to hear from you
