La Spezia ? where.

Mediterranean cruises are calling into several ports depending on the size of the cruise ship. So Livorno is commonly know as the port to visit Florence and Pisa. This is a big industrial port so if you have been to both of those cities before not a lot for you to do.

We are now finding some ships are calling into La Spezia as an alternative. However the journey can take over two hours each way, so what else is there to do in this area of Italy.

I have been recommended by a regular customer a must see crumbling little village called Porto Venere which I believe is a 30 bus or boat ride away. It has a UNESCO recognized harbor at the mouth of Golfo di Poeti. This pretty hillside town was once frequented by the poet George Byron. It as a selection of bars, shops and quint places to eat lining this harbor front.

A 10 minute taxi ride away is Biassa situation 300 mtrs above sea level and with its jade green enchanting woodland backdrop it is yet another hidden gem along the Italian Riviera. Spectacular views of its steeply-stacked houses rolling down the hill to crystal clear waters below.

Just two alternative options to enjoy this port of call, which I will be visiting next week whilst aboard Celebrity reflection. I will tell you all about that on my return.
