Life on board as a Crew member.

Working for Celebrity cruises I’d thought I would give you the insight into life on board for crew members.
On average most crew work a 6 month spell (Stateroom attendents normally 9 months).  We have our own little family atmosphere below the guest decks.  There are laundry rooms, break rooms, crew bars, two crew messes’ and internet rooms.  Sometimes there are crew gyms onboard too.  Much contrary to beliefs crew do have cabins on board.  They are not transported ashore in the night and flown in by helicopter in the morning.

Remembering that there are on average 2500 crew on 90,000 tonnes ships and quite a bit of the hull of the ship is under water, thats where the crew sleep.  At any one time there could be upto 55 different nationallities of crew dedicated to making your cruise experience an enjoyable one.  Once in port, depending on which department you work in, you are able to venture out and enjoy the sights and sounds on land.  In St Maarten you will see most crew memebers in the electronic shops picking up the dvd/laptop bargains to make their cabins more homely and any ports with supermarkets will be full of crew grabbing snacks and toiletries.

Crew parties are arranged for Independence days and national holidays and of corse Halloween, Christmas and New Year.  On average crew members work 14 hour days so you cannot begrudge them a few drinks.
