Messing About On The River

I was asked this week what was all the hype about a river cruise. I can understand people asking, especially if they have not been on one. Smaller ships, no big singing and dancing shows or casinos, no huge pools or climbing walls etc,  so why do people rave about them?  I know why I love river cruising, so I can only tell you of my personal experience and how much I would do another one again.

Dot The I’s And Cross Those T’s!

Time off ticked, cruise booked ticked, suitcase packed ticked, passport ticked? visa ticked?  I may be telling you how to suck eggs here but you would be surprised at how many people forget to check is the passport with them when they travel? Is the passport valid? Have they got any visas they may need?

With the recent announcement from NCL cruises that they are going all inclusive, many of you have been confirming how pleased you are. They have the most amazing suites on offer, which is ideal for a couple or a bigger party of family or friends.

The Top Of The World

There are so many destinations you can cruise too, and many of you out there have cruised to alot of them. I sometimes feel the world is a much smaller place then we think however, how many of you have been up to the “top of the world?”  Cruise & Maritime cruises have a really smashing voyage sailing from Tilbury to Trondheim and the Arctic city of Tromsø before continuing deep inside the Arctic Circle to Honningsvåg, Norway’s northernmost city. From there it sails around the North Cape to Russia’s White Sea to discover historic Archangel and  Murmansk.

There’s A New Kid In Town

Watch out P&O! With the recent news that MSC cruises will be sailing from Southampton next year, I think P&O cruises will be watching them very carefully.  I really do rate MSC. The ships are all beautiful in style, cabins are smashing and the food in all honesty is very good. They have made the decision to commit to the UK market with the lovely Magnifica ship sailing from Southampton between April and October 2018.  MSC are an Italian cruise line however, they are changing things a little with the departures from the UK. For example they will have a British cruise director, bring in British comedians as part of the entertainment team and if there are any big sporting fixtures on at the time of the cruise they will be showing it on board. That’s not all, if you want a good cup of tea (ie PG tips) you can have it along with such items like a full English breakfast, British beers and ciders and HP sauce and Marmite!  They are even going to have kettles in your cabin which is a real selling point with us Brits!

A South American Adventure

I love to get feedback from my clients good or bad, this also gives me an insight to what people have experienced especially if I have not been to that part of the world before.  Mrs J & Mr M T have recently returned from a fantastic South American trip sailing on the Crown Princess. They emailed me as they travelled which was fab and have also sent me photos – thanks to them we can share this amazing trip!

A Viking Alternative

When you are thinking of booking a cruise do you automatically go for the cruise line you have sailed with before or someone else? Of course with so many good offers around I guess you look at who does offer what at the time. Recently some lovely clients of mine have returned from a Viking Ocean cruise and loved them so much they have booked 2 more. Perhaps Viking is something you would put with a river cruise and not a ocean cruise? If that is the case, then I would put them on your radar.

Fred Are Certainly On The Up!

If you have ever cruised before with Fred Olsen you will know that the service, ambience, and food are smashing. Fred’s are always looking to improve either in new destinations or having a makeover on the ships.  The Black Watch had a recent upgrade, 4 weeks of extensive engineering work, maintenance and refurbishment. One of the things I have said for a while is they really do need to update the cabins as the furnishings look a bit tired.  All cabins on decks 4, 5, 7, 8 & 9 now have brand new carpets, bed frames and mattresses. The bathrooms are completely refurbished and have a more contemporary look, well done Fred!

What’s The Best Ship You Have Been On And Why?

Do you have a favourite ship and why?  You would be surprised at how many times I am asked this every single day. This got me thinking to asking a few of my lovely clients which ship was the best they had been on or their favourite. It is interesting to see the different reasons.

Come Up North!

Last weekend Keith and I had 2 days in Edinburgh. I used to live there and really do love the city. We stayed on the Royal Mile which is a great place with the castle at the top and Holyrood Palace at the bottom. We went back to the castle again, walked around the sites, did a bit of shopping and visited a few pubs!  Recently there has been a rise in Northern cruises, from Iceland, the Northern Lights and around Britain. When talking to my clients who live down south, I am shocked that many of you have not even been to Edinburgh. However, if I think of all the places I have not been to in the South of England or even Wales then it makes sense.
