When is a space not just a space?

The definition of the word space is ‘a continuous area which is free, available and unoccupied’. Now whilst the space I am talking about will probably never be unoccupied it has a great feeling on continuity, freedom and availability and is probably one of the best uses of space I have ever seen on any ship I have been on, and there have been quite a few.

It is also, I think, the largest indoor space I have ever seen on a ship. To be honest, it blew me away. By day and by night, the space on Quantum of the Seas known as Two70 was quite the most wonderful area, a huge ‘space’ that has a calm, tranquil and relaxing feel during the day whilst allowing for unparalleled 270 degree views through the floor to ceiling glass at the rear of the ship – two storey’s high. By night it evolves quite effortlessly into an entertainment area the likes of which I have never seen!

The enormous windows became a screen of multiple images and illusions while in front of them 6 giant screens on robotic arms, themselves portraying images, ducked and dived and glided around. Entertainers appeared on podiums rising up from the floor and from beyond the ceiling, singing, dancing and playing instruments. At one point a chellist sitting on a chair hovered in mid air quite effortlessly. Never before have I seen entertainment like this.

It was absolutely astounding and I have to say that I take my hat off to Royal Caribbean for devising this unique and utterly groundbreaking area that without doubt takes entertainment on cruise ships to a whole new level.

The whole multi-level area is filled with comfortable armchairs and sofas so it is great for relaxation on days at sea if you are not a sunworshipper. There is a well stocked bar for refreshment of the liquid kind, always a bonus, and if you fancy taking your lunch or afternoon tea in Two70 why not stop off at the Cafe at Two70 on the way in where there is hot and cold food and an assortment of drinks available, something to tempt every palate.

If I was to sail on Quantum, or her sister ship Anthem which will be sailing ex-Southampton in 2015, I can see myself spending alot of time in this wonderfully well thought out space. I loved the atmosphere during the day, whilst sampling the offerings from the cafe of course, and was blown away the the evening entertainment.
