Flowrider – Coming soon to a supermarket near you!

Well there you go, it just shows how much, or little, I know! Ever since Royal Caribbean launched the surf simulators that we have come to know and love, the Flowrider, I thought this was a really clever invention by themselves, however it would appear not.

I was talking to a client the other day who had done a Florida Cruise and Stay over Christmas and New Year (lucky them!). Anyway, while doing the ‘Stay’ part of their vacation they popped into the supermarket next to their hotel and guess what was in the supermarket? Yup, a surf simulator. They said they couldn’t believe their eyes as they didn’t know that these were anywhere other than on Royal Caribbean ships, and to be honest I was equally surprised. I must know nothing!

Following the conversation I ‘googled’ surf simulators, firstly in Florida, and they are all over the place, and then everywhere else. I kid you not, surf simulators are everywhere, absolutely everywhere. There are several here in the UK and you can even hire them out for functions. although I have yet to locate one in a supermarket in the UK.

I must admit the logistics worry me a bit. I mean, would I go on the surf simulator first then wander around the supermarket picking up my groceries dripping wet, or should I do my shopping first then park my trolley up next to the simulator and hope that nobody walks off with it while I am riding the surf?? It’s a tough one isn’t it. And it isn’t cheap either. Average prices in Florida seem to be around $25 for half an hours surfing.

Well there you go. It seems you really do learn something new everyday. What could possibly pop up next? A robotic bar serving cocktails in my local M&S cafe? Maybe a North Star hovvering over my local shopping centre!
