Qantas Makes History

Last Sunday (25th of March 2018) we saw the first non-stop flight land in Heathrow after taking off from Perth 17 hours prior. The journey was on Qantas Airlines on board one of their Boeing 787 dreamliner.  How amazing is this, to be able to fly all that way without having to touch down or change. I expected this to happen sooner or later with the world is developing. The question is, would you find it too gruelling? Would you prefer to get off and stretch your legs, or do you like the idea of getting the long haul flight over within one stint? I have flown this journey and sitting in one position for this amount of time with only having a few toilet breaks can be tiring and mentally challenging. On the outbound journey I was excited about my trip and couldn’t wait to see the other side of the world, however coming home was different. Your holidays over, jet lag will set in and you probably won’t feel as though you have been away and you will only have your photos to remind you. I can actually remember changing at Singapore and it was a quick stop as the previous flight had been delayed and once on board counting down the hours. Finally, there were a mere four hours left and I remember it was like flying home from Tenerife and we were nearly there. The cabin crew was great at coming round at regular intervals with refreshments and to think they do this journey all the time, I take my hat off to them.

The aircraft received a warm welcome at Heathrow with a welcoming party of Beefeaters and someone playing the didgeridoo. As I type this she will already be airbound for Perth after a well-deserved rest of 8 hours on the tarmac.

I can’t help thinking back to the Concorde and how sad it is they are grounded. You would think how fast and instant the world is becoming they would have modified the aircraft or indeed build a better alternative. Watch this space I’m sure in the future it will happen.
