Well I have always been impressed with the captains navigating in to small spaces, the Norweigan Fjords, Small Caribbean islands and the pacific islands are a just a few to mention, but this was just the tip of the Iceberg – LITERALLY

The Celebrity infinity crashed due to high winds on Friday 03rd June, with gusts of wind reported of 45 mph, its hardly surprising that the ship couldn’t stop as they came in to dock at Ketchikan.

The harbour master noticed something was wrong, when the 965 FT vessel was trying to dock and crashed in to the barrier, causing one of the gangways to break off and puncture the ships hull causing approximately 2 million pounds worth of damage.

There were loud crashes with the sound of metal scraping and ripping against the pier, witnesses said. People were watching from the decks of the ship and on there balconies, must have been very frightening. Luckily enough no injuries were reported either on board the ship or on the pier.

The Celebrity Infinity that is 90,940 in tonnes carries 2170 passenger and crew, was only refurbished in 2015.

There are reports that there is a visible hole on the ships port side, just above the waterline, but apparently is still seaworthy. It would appear that the pier came off worse and could take months to repair.

The ship was on a 7 night voyage from Vancouver, with Ketchikan being the last port of call.

We all need to be reassured that this doesn’t happen very often at all, and that this was an extreme situation caused by the high winds in Alaska,  I feel sorry for the captain of the Celebrity Infinity as he is probably feeling that he has let his passengers down as well as his company.

It wouldn’t put me off sailing with them, how about you?
