Queen Mary Transatlantic – Part 3

Following on from my earlier blogs Part 1 and Part 2 of my transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2, this weeks blog picks up from the start of day 5.

Today I awoke early and went to watch a couple of the girls whom had enlisted in the fencing class, I went along to capture some video and photos for them and it looked like really good fun. It was something I had initially wanted to do, but due to other things didn’t get a chance to sign up, but on my next trip with Cunard it will be the first thing on my list to join. In fact both the girls have said it is something they may continue once home.

I also took advantage of the complimentary laundry on board, there are several around the ship and all the facilities are free including the washing powder. There are around 6 laundry rooms on the ship and they are open from 7.30am until 9pm. With approx 4 washing machines and 4 dryers it can still get busy and sometimes there is a wait for a machine to become available. The laundry rooms also have iron boards and irons available to use. Well worth saving a few pennies and doing your own laundry when you have this many days at sea.

After breakfast, I popped along to the Queens room and watched the open rehearsals of a new theater show being put in to production for Cunard. This is something new that they tried out on the cruise, it was a chance for us the audience to watch the process and lend some tips and hints if something didn’t quite flow. It was really good fun to watch and we was able to see the ‘rough’ end product before arriving into New York in the main Royal Theater.

After lunch in the pub, we went to the Commodore Lounge at the front of the ship and watched a mixology class. Three different cocktails made for us, a classic Martini which is just like paint stripper, another type of Martini also very strong and not to my taste and the a cool cucumber – a gin based drink which was delicious. They say that it takes 15 minutes for alcohol to reach the blood stream, for me not being a drinker, I think it took 15 seconds. So fair to say after the class I had to go and sleep the alcohol off ready for our night in the Kings Court Alternative dining!

Tonight was a non-formal evening but for gentleman, you are still required to wear a jacket and tie for dining. As group 1, we ate at the Kings Court Alternative dining. They close off the far part of the dining court for waiter service and there is a charge and they change the menu every 2 days and for us this evening it was the Smoke House American Cuisine. It was OK, nothing outstanding. We was advised to order 2 x mains as the waiter explained they are small portions, this was not the case. I had the butter chicken and the smokey ribs. In hindsight I would only order the ribs as they was delicious and nothing else. Not my best meal but would try again.

After dinner we went to the theater as they had a special guest performance, Jenna Lee James a well known west end and broadway star. Jenna has appeared in hit shows such as We Will Rock You, Mumma Mia, Wicked and many more. The evening was just her and a band signing her favourite songs from her shows and others. It was a really nice evening.

Then it was off to the Queens room and this evening was the balloon drop. It was such a great night, everyone dancing to the modern songs performed by the big band and just having a great time.

Day 6 started with a lazy lie in, some breakfast and then off to tour the ship to get more footage for work. It was a windy one and some of the higher decks had been closed for safety, but I managed to get as much content for work as possible. I also managed to get some shopping in too!

We had some ‘work’ to do today too, joining in pairs to record a video blog on our experience so far. I am pleased to say that my colleague Laura and I won and we would be experiencing a day in the spa as a prize.  When I saw my colleagues around the ship, we all seemed to have the same idea of a quieter more relaxed day. Tonight we would be enjoying the roaring twenty’s themed evening ball and we was all excited for this.

We was not disappointed, the themed ball was amazing. After dinner we headed to the Queens Room for some ballroom dancing or watching in my case and then headed to the G32 night club for a boogie with DJ Neil. After an hour or so, I left the rest to it as tomorrow morning we was reaching Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Watch out for the next blog when we finally reach land..
