Free the Lobsters!!!!!!!

If you were to ask people what the most memorable thing was about their cruise I would bet my bottom dollar that the great food on board would probably be in the top 3 things they loved. I have yet to have my cruise ruined or affected by poor food or bland food on board. In fact, I always tend to be very adventurous when I am on the ship, Ok, not very but I do try.

Lots of cruise lines have special items you can order along with your dinner, just to give things a taste. Two Years ago I was on a Carnival cruise and they have a selection of starters called ‘Dontcha’ as in ‘Don’t you wish you had tried this’. Items on this bonus menu ranged from spicy Alligator fish cakes to shark. Our waiter was great and brought us out a portion every night along with our starter. It was like a bush tucker trial and my sister was game and tried every one of them.

My point is that lots of people are taking the opportunity of the great dining to try different things they wouldn’t normally at home. One of these being Lobsters. I would always be afraid of ordering them when out for dinner at home, not only due to the cost, but what if I didn’t like them? It would just be a waste.

A recent trend on board regarding Lobsters could be having a detrimental affect on the European Lobster population. Experts believe that passengers are buying Lobsters and ordering the waiters to throw them overboard thinking they are saving them. In some cases local fishermen are finding them still with elastic bands around their claws. Which is obviously not the outcome anyone intended.

The Canadian species that have been found cannot compete with the native European lobsters and are unable to interbreed. Scientists at the University of Hull have said they will examine any that are found in future to see if they carry disease that could be a threat to the native population.

The passengers hearts are obviously in the right place and they are trying to save the lobsters but in the end the poor wee lobsters have the same outcome. I think this is something cruise lines need to take action with and ban their staff from throwing them over board. This would prevent the problem from getting worse. passengers on board may still request this being done but if the time was taken to educate them as to why this can’t happen, it may make them understand that by saving them they are in fact doing the opposite and actually endangering home grown ones.

I would love to know your thoughts on this ………………….
