Princess Cruises Increase Gratuities Again!

Gratuities are always a hot topic of conversation when it comes to cruising, especially for us British as compulsory tipping is not something we are accustomed too.

So the recent announcement that Princess cruises is set to increase their gratuities from the 15th Dec 2016 is sure to create some annoyance, especially as this is the second increase in under a year.

Inside, Ocean View & Balcony cabins will increase from $12.95 per person per day to $13.50

Mini Suites from $13.95 – $14.95

Suites will increase to $15 per person per day

I’ve spoken to some unhappy passengers already who have sailings booked for next year and don’t want to pay the higher price. My the best advise if you are in the same situation is to pre pay before the 15th Dec 2016. You can pay these on your cruise personaliser or by contacting Princess directly and making payment over the phone.

Personally I think all cruise lines should include the costs of Gratuities as part of the cruise fare.

Using Princess as an example if you were going on a 7 night voyage in an inside cabin you would have $94.50 per person gratuities added to the final bill. This equates to £72 which seems a lot when you see your bill at the end of a holiday but would anyone have noticed or complained if their initial cruise cost was £72 more expensive? I really don’t think so!

It’s great to see more and more cruise lines like Thomson, Azamara and many of the luxury brands are starting to take notice and now include gratuities as part of the cruise fare.

None of which have reported a drop in service, in fact the on board staff are likely to be happier as I can’t imagine how disappointing it must be for them to work hard all cruise and then to receive little or no tip at the end of it.
