Fights at sea and bad behaviour, an anomaly or the norm for some on holiday?

The tranquility of Samui, ruined for me by INX!!

We all been on a cruise or indeed a holiday where another group of people or individuals have been irritating to the point of ruining the holiday.

I remember once on a dream beach resort holiday in Koh Samui, Thailand, a group of Australians camping out at one of the pools and playing INXs loudly all day as if to make the point, “we are Australian, this is our pool and yes we are on holiday.” Point was well and truly received by myself and my kiwi wife who made much noise about their “neighbours” from across the pond. So recent new reports about another group of Aussies on a Carnival cruise was no surprise to me – Big fight(s) on Aussie cruise but its not just an Australian thing, us Brits can be terrible abroad as well, as numerous reality tv shows prove.

The following article is written about an Oceania cruise – supposedly a 5* plus line but clearly just because people pay a lot of money AND have more space associated with this type of brand dont make the problems of anti social behaviour disappear, they just do these things in 5* luxury instead!  Sunlounger hogging

Everyone has to go on holiday be it with children like me, with bad personal hygiene/manners or just a tendency to have too many drinks and get in a fight like on Carnival Legend. Its all meant to be fun though surely and a bit of live and let live goes a long way (except when someone is grabbing you by the throat I suppose)

So what is the right way to behave on a cruise, it is a persons hard earned holiday, so they have the right to holiday how they see fit surely?

I’m not sure I agree, when you are in such a close environment with other people I think you are duty bound to be respectful of other peoples space and of their ears (I dont mind INXs but played on loop daily was a bit much). I also travel with my children a fair bit and I try at all times to make sure the decibel levels are as low as possible but some would say that this is a sort of anti social behaviour (however accidental) and annoyance that they shouldnt have to put up with so its the same thing I guess and in the eye of the beholder.

The below guide to cruise etiquette goes a long way to explain how people should endeavour to behave on a cruise, it goes without saying this is just normal everyday behaviour for most people anyway…

Cruise etiquette do’s and dont’s

In the end it is not a cruiselines or resorts responsibility to chaperone people or correct peoples behaviour, in the end my opinion is if people cant behave appropriately or respectfully to others then there is always the next port of call for them to get off.

About Me

I started travelling straight after leaving education, saving up for a year then heading off to New Zealand for the first time. After getting the bug, working in travel seemed to make sense and that's where I started off. I have worked for Carnival UK at their offices in…
