The Atlantic is never the same one month to the next whilst your friends had problems it could be fine for your trip, there is no way of knowing. Whether September or October there is always the chance of hurricanes having an effect as well, whilst many hit land and become less of a problem some do travel up the USA eastern seaboard, but hopefully that won't bother you either. Sorry to be a bit depressing best not to think about it just and go there to enjoy yourselves.
