With regards to exchange rates you could do worse than go on line to Marks & Spencer.

I've just had a look at the post office web site and although it states it can be used in shops and restaurants worldwide there is the proviso that it is dependent upon them accepting VISA Electron. Transaction or cash withdrawal fees will also be incurred. The question is, do Princess accept VISA Electron? My feeling is that they DO NOT, simply because the Electron card requires online authorisation for every transaction, which is something a ship at sea does not do (which is why they insist on normal credit cards). You will end up trying to find a bank to withdraw USD cash in the mediterranean (no chance!!). Take the advice already posted - use USD Travellers Cheques or just take cash as you had intended. Have a nice holiday.

Open yourself a Marks & Spencer (& More) Credit Card. M & S give the best exchange rates either in their stores or when purchasing goods in dollars i.e. a ship's account settlement.

I keep putting this info. on the boards, because it was something I didnt know, and I was really grateful to learn: Princess ships calculate your whole bill in us dollars. If you have registered a UK credit card (any at all), then they will convert the account to UK pounds, and then submit it to your credit card. When we went in Nov. the £ was worth 2.02 US, Princess used a rate of $1.75 to the £...see what I am saying (like 25% difference) AND then for the privilege they add a 3% service charge!! When you register your credit card before you board there is a slip with very small print that allows you the option of "Do Not Convert". Tick this, and also write in capital letters somewhere on it. When you are on board go to pursers desk and check that this has been registered. In fact the best way is to settle your account on the last night in US dollars.

We took 2000 US dollars with us on our trip and had paid our account at the end of the journey in cash. We put our cash in the safe and got out what we needed when we needed it. If you are vigilant with your cash you will be fine.

Thank you all for your answers the reason i asked this question was because i didn't want to end up in the situation that Oaks from runcorn has described so it's cash then for us i think.

My Cruise Experience of the Tu...

By Richard Smith

Last week I sailed with Thomson Cruises on their new TUI Discovery 2 which has been recently acquired by Thomson and was formerly the Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas.I hadnt sailed with Thomson before and although I had generally had a very positive response from my clients about them I had been a little bit put off personally by the smaller size and age of their fleet of ships. With Thomson now taking on some of these larger (medium sized in real terms) ships with a more modern design, thi...

Single Supplements Not The Fau...

By Freddie Moser

Freddie Moser's blog

After having my head bitten off yet again this week for simply doing my job, I thought it was high time to set the record straight about prices and supplements for single travels and inform people of the role of the agent, i.e me.In the cruise industry we have many guests in the higher age range, down to the relaxing nature of a cruise, the luxury element, and a lot of the time, because the non-retired can’t afford the time or the money during their work schedule to take in a cruise.Nat...

Off to Rockley

By Gemma Coles

Gemma Coles's blog

Well it is finally time for my holiday. I am off to Poole in Dorset tomorrow to stop at Rockley Park for 11 days. I am really looking forward to a break and spending some time with my husband. We have had a busy year so far and as I am heavily pregnant with our first baby due in August we haven’t been away at all yet this year. It has been so hot the last few days with the heatwave we had and now the weather is turning and the forecast isn’t great for our time away. I wouldn&...
