Cockburn - Answered a Question by Brrang (01 Jul 08 17:34)

Check with your travel agent or RCI direct as it varies from ship to ship. On Navigator of the seas last year there was smoking and non smoking areas in most bars and I believe there still is on most ships. However this year on Independence there was only 1 bar area which was a disco from 11pm which was good for young people but no other bar for entertainment or dancing provided smoking areas. The cigar lounge was ok for a quick puff. The open deck areas on Deck 4, 11 and 12 are fine if it was sunny and warm but a bit parky when the wind's blowing. Most smokers on our cruise (14th-28th June) were complaining that having asked the question before booking they were not given correct information and had expected there to be more provision. On questioning Customer Relations staff we were told that it had been widely publisied that Independence was a 'no-smoking' ship. Apparently not when it was quite a surprise to most smokers. It was especially difficult for people with cabins without balconies. One good thing about this restriction is that most of the smokers (and there were loads) got to know each other and there was always a bit of fun and laughter even if there was not enough tables for us all on decks or the disco. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry I really don't know, however we were told that Independence was the only ship with such smoking restrictions. I hoping that's true as we are going on Jewel next May to the Baltics and I think it will be a lot colder than the Bahamas for an outside smoke. Although there is definitely no smoking in any stateroom on the whole fleet if you have a balcony you can there. Probably best to check with Royal Caribbean directly or get your travel agent to check which areas you can inside. Hope you have a great cruise.
