Wilba - Answered a Question by Milligan (27 Aug 08 21:22)

Wi fi is $0.55per minute Or $28 per hour pre paid. There are no mobile phone masts in the middle of the ocean, so wait until you get into port before you pick up a signal.

Thank you Wilba, N for your response. I am not the 'brightest light in the street' in relation to modern day communication systems, but usuing your analogy, I assume there are also no wireless routers in the middle of the ocean, so how do we get Wi-Fi? Maybe something to do with satellites perhaps, and not trailing cables, or floating masts? The RCI brochure states, quote, "Mobile Phone Service - RCI has an advanced roaming network onboard all ships allowing you to make and receive calls, voice mail, text messages and GRPS data using your own mobile phone and telephone number", unquote. Perhaps a similar satellite used for Wi-Fi and not some form of floating mast in the middle of the ocean.

Why wouldn't there be wireless routers at sea? The routers are not dependent on being attached to anything to work, (apart from a computer) so there is absolutely no reason not to use them. The ship connects to the internet via satellite, then the signal is distributed around the ship by, er, wireless routers....... However, the connection is SERIOUSLY slow 24 hours a day.

Yes, sorry I missed the fact your on Navigator. Mobile Phone is available by satellite but I've never seen prices published as it probably varies by the network provider. Someone commented recently their daughter had run up a bill of £600!!! on a weeks cruise & others comment on similar shocks to the system on receipt of their bill. Hence my comment , wait till you get into port to pick up a signal.

Travelling the Globe!

By Stacey Williams

I am so excited for tomorrow as I have been invited to London for the annual Globe Travel Awards. I have never been to an awards ceremony before so I was over the moon to receive an invite from the amazing MSC Cruises. My plan is to pack in the morning just before travelling as we have been so busy at Cruise HQ I have had no time to organize anything. My train is booked for 9am from Dumfries to Carlisle and then onto Euston. I will (hopefully) arrive at around 1pm. I then need to navigat...
