The only problem with taking off the automatic tip is that anything you give your steward or waiter has to be handed in, they are not allowed to keep it and it has to be put into a"pool" to be shared by everyone. Your $10.50 per day goes to everyone from your steward to the guy painting the railings. Some might say pay them more and add the price to the cruise but this is the way Princess works .

Have to disagree with Pilgrim only the immediate staff looking after you get the money nd I have checked up on this the painter of the railings and the kitchen staff etc don't see any of that money. Immediate staff are your cabin steward and the waiter in the diningroom and his/her assistant plus maitre'd and housekeeper and not on all ships do these two get anything.

Re tips on Princess. Which way of tipping would you recommend. Tip the Princess way by adding to your account or tip privately at the end of the cruise.

This past few cruises we had added the cost to our seapass account but you still have an envelope to hand to the staff on the last night which contains a card advising them of this option, but they will be have told in advance anyway that you have opted to do this. If you do have a member of staff who is exceptional you can still add dollars to that envelope so they do get a bit of a surprise. This year we have opted to pay when we settle our final account and along with our excursions all that cost is taken care off before we go. As far as the excursions go this is the most expensive way but my wife had a stroke a few years ago and we feel it is safer. On many a cruise now we have been there so often we just go shopping or realx in the sun, hope this helps.

Princess suggest an amount to be credited to your onboard account but you may adjust or remove this amount if you wish once you are onboard. When we were on last year they announced special times when you could have this done. If I remember correctly the figure was 10 dollars a day per person which we halved and then tipped our cabin boy and waiter separately.

My advice would be to have cancelled any amount that is credited to your account as soon as you can. Enquire about this as soon as you board the ship! Buy a few inexpensive Thank You cards before you leave the UK. Place your tip in Dollar, Pounds or Euros into the card with a few personal words (the stewards name, etc) and put it in the envelope with the persons name on it. Then, on the last day of your cruise, hand the envelope to the person yourself and thank them for their service. The amount is entirely up to you. The 10$ per person, as mentioned below, is 10$ per passenger, not per person that you want to tip! The usual staff members that you tip are those that give YOU personal service, such as stewards and waiters. You may also wish to tip any other staff that have been particularly attentive and helpful during your cruise! Personally, for a weeks cruise I would be inclined to give my cabin steward around £15-£20, and the two waiters who attend your table at dinner £10-£15 each. When you see how hard these people work to make your cruise enjoyable, you will not want to undervalue them I can assure you! Happy cruising.

The $10 is made up of $3.75 to the cabin steward; $3.75 to your waiter and assistant $1.75 or thereabouts and in some cases there is a recommendation for your maitre'd in the diningroom and the housekeeper which rounded up gives you your $10 you pay per day. The other staff in the bar; the wine waiter; hairdressers etc 15% is added when you order drinks or use their service. We have always been very lucky they have all been excellent so we add the amount to our stateroom account when on the ship or pay at the time when our final invoice is due. On a number of ocaasions we have addded to the amount when we hand them their envelope on the final night as some have been exceptional. I know some do not like paying at the final invoice time but if things were really bad we would take it up with guest services and get a refund onto our stateroom account.

This is an exert from the Princess Cruiser personaliser " Princess makes it easier for you to reward excellent service by automatically adding a discretionary Hotel and Dining charge of $11 USD for suites and mini-suites and $10.50 USD for all other staterooms per person per day (including children) to your shipboard account on a daily basis. This charge will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including the wait staff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, galley staff, laundry staff and others".
