Myself, my husband and 2 children (14 and 2) are also going on the MSC Melody in July 2008. We traveled last year on a different ship with MSC when our little one was only 14 months old and my other 13 and believe that it was such good value for money for a family holiday as the children cruise for free under 18, that we booked again this year. We have traveled twice with Costa Cruises who like MSC are an Italian company and on all trips have found that it was mainly Italians, Spanish, French and Germans on board. However we found plenty of english people to talk to and MSC are trying to encourage more British customers. I speak Italian but my husband does not speak a word but he found it no hindrance to his enjoyment of our holiday on past cruises as all staff on board appeared to speak english well and all the announcements and information leaflets are given in english as well as the other languages. With regard to children eating on board MSC, some evenings we requested simple plain non-italian food for our toddler such as chicken and chips/potatoes etc and it was no trouble for them to do this. I have always found the Italians to be very family minded and very tolerant of children in general, especially the times last year when our little one was not happy ! In fact the Italian passengers and all the ship staff and other nationality passengers made such a fuss of her all the time that she became quite a celebrity on the ship !! Overall I found MSC to be well organised and the staff friendly and helpful with any requests that were made. The cabins were always cleaned spotlessly every day with even the beds being made up in the mornings and put ready at night and the ship was always being cleaned by the deck staff. I hope this helps in some way to allay some of your fears about cruising with MSC, my views are based on my experience of MSC as a company on the Rhapsody ship and I assume that it will be the same company standards and policies on all their ships, as this will be also our first time on the Melody. I went with the view that we were not cruising on a British ship with a British holiday company and that things are done the European way and enjoyed all four of the cruises that I have done with the 2 Italian cruise companies. Plus you get a good choice and the opportunity to try all that wonderful Italian food in the 4/5 course meals in the evening that you would have to pay a fortune for in an Italian restaurant here in England!! Hope you enjoy the cruise ! Christian, Oxfordshire .

She is an old, 3* ship - and you are prepared for the worst it sounds like - so hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised! There is no such thing as a bad cruise as there are always some good points.

No single supplements with Fred. Olsen

By Jo Cunningham

Jo Cunningham's blog

Fred Olsen have just announced their turn of year campaign, with great deals to encourage early bookings and have announced a number of sailings with no single supplement. Fred. Olsen are particularly good for single customers, they have a higher proportion of single passengers than other cruise lines, which makes it easy to mix and make friends. They have a number of single cabins on each ship but these book up early and normally the single supplement on the remaining cabins is just to...
