We've just been on the QE2 and $11 per person per day were added to the onboard account to cover all gratuities. There is also a service charge added to any drinks orders. The only staff not covered by this were in the casino. We also gave our cabin steward and Maître d' some cash at the end, and I left my stash of Rooibos tea for the South Africans on board, as they have a great deal of difficulty finding it! How to make a South African happy...

You are in for a real treat as the QM2 is without doubt the most elegant liner there is and the service is wonderful. As for tipping this is all taken care of by meas of a daily amount that is addedto your end of trip bill. This makes it really easy and given the service you get you will not feel it is to much or an imposition. The system is good as all the staff on the ship share the tips - not just those in jobs that are front of hopuse.Naturally if you want to pay an extra tip to anyone who has been exceptional this is at your discretion but you are under no pressure to do this. Please do not listen to people who try and take exception to this system - they are usually the ones that wouldn't tip anyway and try and justify their meanness!! Have a wonderful time and do try the Commandors Club bar at the front of the ship on deck ten and the glass lifts which take you up there from deck seven ( not everyone finds these lifts but they give you a great view) .

By Dean Michaelides

Dean Michaelides's blog

I recently read an article from a former cruise ship employee. He was explaining that having sex, taking drugs and making friends in the onboard sex dungeon was a regular occurrence on board one Caribbean cruise liner. Despite having sex with the clients being a sackable offence the staff would have no qualms getting involved. He also mentioned that the riskier the better so as well as having sex in the staff decks they would like to push the boundaries on the unpopulated decks. It wasn’...

Piraeus Athens Gateway Or ...

By Camilla Edwards

Continuing my look at European ports this week I thought I`d choose Piraeus, the port for the Greek capital Athens.Athens is probably most famous for the Acropolis, topped by the Parthenon Temple, and the National Museum. It is a bustling, busy city with lots to do and a place I have visited several times. It has lots of really good hotels, restaurants and bars as well as its history. Many cruise ships now visit Athens using Piraeus as the anchor port. The port sits about 7 miles from the city...
