Should WIFI be FREE?

Now I know a lot of people like to keep in touch with family & friends whilst on board their cruise, some don’t as they like to switch off whilst away.

Personally I leave me phone in the safe and only really use it when off the ship if FREE wifi in cafes etc as I don’t want to pay the prices for Wifi on board.  I use it to take photos and put them on Facebook when I can.

I know a few cruise lines offer FREE wifi on their ships but it’s usually the Luxury market that offer this.  As you have paid a higher price for your cruise so you get those little extras especially if a frequent sailor.

One of my regular clients has just returned from a Cunard cruise on Queen Victoria and was on board for 75 nights so away for a while and thinks Cunard should offer FREE wifi on the longer cruises,  I agree with him as you like to update the folks back home how you are getting on.

What do you think?
Should Cruise lines think about this as an option?

So how much does wifi cost on board? Here are a few examples:-

  1. Cunard – from $0.75 per min, the more you buy the cheaper from $50 for 120 mins upto $170 for 480 mins.
  2. Fred Olsen – from £5 for 30 mins to £30 for 24 hours.
  3. Royal Caribbean – from $35 for 60 mins upto $100 for 250 mins.
  4. Regent – if in Concierge or Suite – 500 mins FREE – $160 for 200 mins or can pay $30 per day for unlimited wifi.

Some cruise lines offer some FREE Wifi within their promotions, I know Norwegian Cruise Lines have offered this before and also Oceania offer FREE Wifi on some of their offers for 1 device per cabin.  MSC Wifi can be added on with your booking too.

The whole world is digital and everyone uses some form of device whether at home or away so I think it’s about time Wifi was sorted for whilst your on a cruise.

Maybe a standard fee of say £50 for unlimited wifi on a cruise – I’m sure more people would pay to use it then.
Not that Wifi on board is the best as can be very hit & miss especially if at sea.

What are your thoughts on this? I’d love to hear your views.

Until next time, Happy Wifi!!
