Packing again!

I am writing this a day before we leave for Orlando. Yes, a land holiday and not a cruise. With every holiday comes the chore of packing.  There’s nothing I love more than getting another stamp on my passport and exploring exciting new destinations and resorts whilst enjoying a well-earned break. But I can tell you what I really, really don’t love…packing. And I’m sure you’d agree, right?

Now packing for a holiday that involves flights needs extra attention as there are so many “rules” which do not apply when cruising out of Southampton. British Airways have set up the following packing tips:

Hand baggage tips
Place money, valuables and important travel documents in your hand baggage.
Avoid the hassle of losing your boarding pass by using your airline flight app. You can download boarding passes for up to eight people in your booking onto your mobile phone.
If you need to take medication, including liquid medication or syringes, pack it in your hand baggage too (if possible, in its original packaging). To avoid delays at airport security, also take a prescription or supporting letter from your doctor that confirms it is prescribed to you.
Follow our guidelines on carrying liquids, gels, aerosols, foods or other restricted items.
Charge any electrical or battery-powered devices such as phones, tablets, e-books and laptops. Airport security might ask you to switch them on.

Checked baggage tips
Check the weather forecast for your destination and make sure you pack the right clothes and shoes.
Place heavy items like shoes where they’ll be at the bottom of your bag when it’s standing upright.
Fill all the space in your bag by folding or rolling smaller items such as socks or underwear to reduce creasing.
Place your toiletries in a washbag and seal any open bottles or tubes to avoid spilling, e.g. by taping the lids or putting them individually in plastic bags.
Don’t forget to leave some room for shopping. Include a lightweight folding bag if you think you might need more space on your return journey but make sure you don’t go over your free checked baggage allowance.

After typing all that I am now beginning to regret even considering a holiday that involves flying. We normally just pack what we want – usually more than we need, get dropped off at the port and see our bags again in the cabin. That sounds a much more relaxing way to a start holiday. Stress-free!!
