World’s first plastic free cruise company…

It has been announced that Hurtrigruten are to become the first cruise company to become plastic free from the 2nd July 2018. The aim is for the expedition line to become the world’s first plastic-free cruise company.

We all know how much plastic pollution is a concern all around the world and we use plastic product on a daily basis without thinking about it or the pollution it causes, so banning it all surely is just good news for the environment

They will be banning plastic straws which will be replaced by metal ones, plastic cutlery, plastic bags, toothpics, plastic aprons, plastic lids on coffee and even single-use packaging of butter! The butter one i would not of even thought about, would you? It just goes to show how much plastic is used on board.

Hurtrigruten travels to some of the most amazing places in the world so it is important to start protecting these waters. They will also be imposing the ban on hotels, restaurants and other establishments of Hurtigruten’s land-based operations on Svalbard, operated by its fully owned subsidiary Hurtigruten Svalbard.

Now that this has been announced i do wonder if other cruise lines will follow suit, i personally feel they should, surely if it is better for our environment. I know a couple of cruise lines have mentioned it but nothing set in stone yet. We will have to wait and see!

It does also make me think that at home we should maybe start using less plastic, like carrier bags (this is a big let down from me, i always say i will re-use my bags, but always forget them and end up buying more the next time).

What’s you thoughts on this, are you a fan or reducing plastic pollution?

Trudy
