ABOUT MS ZAANDAM

Typical Passengers

With its rock and roll theme, MS Zaandam is sure to appeal to any fans of classic rock. However, it also attracts the typical mature crowd that tends to gravitate to Holland America Line cruises, typically arriving from North America. There are several play areas and specialty programs for children, encouraging families to enjoy the fun as well.

Ship Amenities

Sleek and modern, the Zaandam features a stylish Lido Deck with a glass-enclosed pool and wraparound promenade deck. This is the space to sit back, relax or admire the ocean views. Visit the outdoor Oasis space to admire the waterfall, sun loungers and bar. Inside is where you’ll find all the music memorabilia, acquired in 1997 from a Christie’s of London auction. Rock fans will have a great time noticing all the details, with instruments on show from Bill Clinton, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards among others! Another intriguing focal point is the 22-foot high traditional Dutch pipe organ, with puppets that move in time to the music. Indoor leisure areas include the Wajang Theatre for cinema showings, along with play areas for children and teens and the Explorations internet café. Foodies won’t want to miss a visit to the Culinary Arts Centre, with its live cooking demonstrations, and there’s also a glittering Casino for card sharks.

Cabin Amenities

There are loads of different price categories on the MS Zaandam, according to cabin size, layout and position on the ship. At the top of the range is the opulent Penthouse Suite, with its own fully-stocked wet bar, marble-clad bathroom with Jacuzzi tub, dining area and living room. Suite occupants have access to their own private concierge lounge as well. There’s a high standard of comfort even in the standard cabins, with vanity units, minibars, private bathrooms with toiletries, and tasteful furnishings. Interconnecting rooms are available for families and friend groups, and there are also 23 dedicated cabins for guests with limited mobility.

Dining Options

The ship’s main restaurant is called the Rotterdam Dining Room, which boasts an elegant interior, sweeping staircase and ocean views on three sides. The menus are standard for cruising, with a selection of grilled fish, chicken and vegetarian options, along with salads, soups and starters to round out dinner service. Breakfast and lunch are open-seating, and you have your choice of open or assigned seating for dinner. Indulge in the fresh cuisine of the Pacific Northwest with a visit to the Pinnacle Grill, one of the ship’s specialty dining outlets. Expect plenty of premium-grade steaks and fresh produce in this sophisticated restaurant. Are you more in the mood for a casual dinner or quick snack? Visit the Lido buffet for grab-and-go items, or Terrace Café for burgers, hot dogs and chips. At night, part of the Lido space transforms into Canaletto, a casual Italian eatery popular with families.

Entertainment

In addition to the live cooking demonstrations, casino and bevy of bars, there’s a spacious theatre on the MS Zaandam. Mondriaan Show Lounge spans two decks with plush banquette seating and lively song-and-dance cabaret shows.

Sports and Wellness

Work up a sweat on the basketball court, try your hand at shuffleboard, or take a spin around the outdoor jogging track to boost your heartrate. The Greenhouse Spa also includes a gym section with state-of-the-art cardio and weight-lifting equipment. Afterwards, relax with a good steam or sauna session! The spa offers all the services you’d expect, from facials to massages and more.

The ship was very well looked after and had a lovely open feel about it. We chose to use the Ocean bar for pre dinner cocktails where the waiters were excellent and looked after our every need.
