Venice floods

Venice has been hit by the worst floods since 2008. High water can be a problem in Venice between October and January but usually it is a flash flood that you may not even notice if you are inside and usually clears after a few hours.

This time it was much worse with water levels reaching 140cm and didn;t recede , the water remained on the streets for hours on end in between high tides.
I visited Venice this year and you can see most of the buildings are only inhabited from the 2nd floor up because flooding is a problem.
It must have been very disappointing for tourists to experience that especially if only there for a short break.
Venice is such a beautiful city with endless cobbled streets and bridges. It is so busy in the summer months so maybe spring time would be the best time to visit when there are less crowds and not as hot or wet !!
Here are a few pictures from our stay this year

I am sure climate control has a lot to answer for and many people feel that cruise ships aren’t helping the situation with large ships sailing in the lagoon.
The mayor did try to ban them a few years ago but the decision was over ruled.
Adverse weather does affect cruise ship schedules and when there is a high tide ships are sometimes delayed docking in Venice.
You need to be very careful when booking your own flights to be sure you aren’t risking an early departure.
If you have booked your flights with me or with the cruise line then it is our responsibility to change your flights if necessary but if you have booked your own it is at your own risk. Sometimes it is very little difference in price to book as a package and have the extra security and financial protection.
Recently a cruise ship broke its moorings and collided with another ship in Italy due to adverse weather conditions. The ship didn;t arrive into the final destination in Rome until the following afternoon which meant there were a lot of people who had missed their flights.
Worth bearing in mind when making your holiday plans especially with weather constantly changing now days.
