Vancouver, Capilano & Bears

I have been lucky enough to travel to Canada and on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff and have to say, the sights I saw were like nothing I had ever seen before.  I will continue with the Rocky Mountaineer a bit later as Canada had plenty to keep me interested.

I started with a flight to Vancouver with Air Transat out of Gatwick, they have their own terminal and all went smoothly with the exception of my travelling partner who picked up the wrong passport and her mum and to rush to our aid and left us with only seconds to spare!

We had a couple of nights in Vancouver, a City which I absolutely adored, clean fresh and the people were lovely, huge breakfasts so beware.  We took a trip out to Whistler and were happy to discover the Iron Man competition while we were there.  About an hour down Highway 1 on the transcanada road.

Vancouver does have its own National Park which is a fabulous open, green space and very popular just for a good wander and watch out for wildlife, a perfect afternoon.

Grouse Mountain was another trip we took, we stopped at the Salmon hatchery on the way, to be honest unless you are there for the Salmon run end of September/October there is not a great deal to see.

Onwards to  Capilano for the Suspension Bridge, the rope and bridge themselves had quite a long wait so if you do go, I would suggest pre-booking, we opted for the Cliff Walk, still had a half hour queue but the scenery is stunning and the time passed quickly.  the whole area is very well  laid out, plenty of seating and bars/restaurants.  There are free shuttles from the library in Vancouver if you want to do your own thing.

Grouse Mountain involved a Sky Gondola, which as I am not a fan of heights was probably my least favourite thing to do, the views again are stunning and will take you almost to the top, there is a further one to take you higher and in the winter months there is good skiing available.

There are bears on site, you are kept away from them with fencing, they have a huge area to roam free, you may or may not see them, we saw 2 on the day, to be honest, if they really wanted to get to you I think they could, the fencing wasn’t up to much but they seem very happy just to watch us.

After our adventures in and around Vancouver, it was time to board the Rocky Mountaineer, i will cover this next time with Wolf Lakes, Lake Louise and the train itself.
