Race For Life 2018

What a change in the weather eh!  Fingers crossed the second heat wave comes back soon.  So if you follow my Facebook you would have seen that I recently completed the Swansea Race For Life 5k.  I have done this before, but always is a challenge for me, although I play rugby, I don’t run for long distances continuously.  So once again my training started by running around my local park, but once the heatwave came through it was harder to make time (all BBQ’s etc), so my training took a back seat.  All of a sudden the race was upon me, and I am not going to lie, I was a bit anxious, but I had my middle sister there and my niece to support me on the start and finish line.

So it was a cloudy day, which for me are perfect conditions, nice and cool with a nice breeze.  There were loads of people there all dressed in pink, and all there to support loved ones, or those just affected by Cancer – I wasn’t running for anyone, in particular, I did to raise funds for a worthy cause, as you never know when you will be affected.

With the warm-up done, it was time to get to the start line, they had separated us into groups of runners, joggers, and walkers.  I split myself between joggers and walkers as I jog for a little bit but then walk etc.  Before I knew it, we were off, and as we got to the start line, the sun put it’s hat on and shone brightly, then it got warm.  We started out along Museum Green in Swansea, where you have the Leisure Centre, then it was on towards the Civic Centre (which is where I got married), after the little jog of about 1KM, it was time to split, so the 10KM runners went on down towards the Mumbles and we headed back along Swansea beach, which I have to say has some spectacular views, so again it was past the Civic Centre and continued along the beach front.  The final 2KM was then around the back of the Museum Green and off down what we call SA1 in Swansea, which is an area where there are some really nice restaurants and bars – tempted to stop for a pint if I’m honest!

So it came to the final 500M, I gave it one last push and I came round the corner to find my sister and niece right at the finish line cheering me on!  It was great to see and hear everyone clapping all the participants over the finish line.  I was then given my medal and a much-needed bottle of water (I finished mine with about 750M to go).  It was a great achievement for me, knowing I can push myself, so next year I am entering the 10KM, and if I complete that with no problems, I will push myself to do the Swansea Half Marathon.

Until next time
